In May 2026, the private lab Red Beast Enterprises closed suddenly after an undercover investigation showed suffering, neglect, and abuse at the facility. Now, another privately-owned Fort Collins laboratory has received multiple critical citations for failing to provide adequate veterinary care to the animals they experiment on, and for failing to follow the rules that ensure experiments are designed with the least amount of harm possible.

On March 24th, Bronco Research Services received a critical citation for the deaths of two beagles. The beagles had been dosed with the highest dose of an experimental substance, after lower doses of the substance had already been found to be harmful. On lower doses, other dogs had experienced “lethargy, drooling, regurgitation, and weight loss.” The study protocol did not address the minimal effects needed to meet the study’s goals, so researchers were dosing animals unnecessarily.

In the inspection report, inspectors noted that after the dogs received the dose, they were observed as being depressed and drooling. By the next morning, one beagle was found dead, while the other dog was euthanized after being found unresponsive. Not only was this high dose unnecessary to test, but the animals were allowed to suffer for hours overnight, before they died.

On the SAME DAY, the facility received another critical citation for not providing adequate veterinary care to rabbits who had been suffering after being used in a surgical study and a regular citation for failing to provide 4 beagles with water for over 5 days. The beagles survived by licking water off the floor after their kennels were cleaned. In previous years, Bronco has been cited for placing incompatible dogs together that resulted in fights and wounds to the dogs and several other serious citations.
